Requiring a long period of frost-free nights, pumpkins take several months to develop into fully ripe fruits. Seeds usually enter the ground in or around June, leading to mature pumpkins in fall. It's no wonder, then, that we associate the bright, bulbous gourd with all things autumnal.

In fact, one of the great American traditions come the fall season is to visit a local pumpkin patch to enjoy the season's offerings and develop an appreciation for the operations that go into producing a healthy harvest. With that in mind, here are what we think are the best pumpkin patches to visit around Red Lion, Pennsylvania.

Family Tree Farm

Field of Pumpkins

You don't have to go far to find a top-notch pumpkin patch. We have one right here in Red Lion. Family Tree Farm is, true to its name, a family operation that goes back seven generations. The farm's history traces back to the early 1800s, and it has remained in the family line for over 200 years now.

Since its beginnings, the Family Tree land has helped to give life to crops and livestock alike. Today, it's a generous lifespring for flowers, apples, Christmas trees, and—of course—pumpkins. Its regular U-Pick Pumpkin event begins in September. The proprietors offer free wagon rides into the pumpkin patch so that you can select your own pumpkin to take home. While you're there, you might as well take advantage of Family Tree's apple orchard, too, where you can find a wealth of Galas, Honeycrisps, Crimson Crisps, Fujis, and Pink Ladies.

If you'd rather not venture into a field in search of a grand gourd, select from the pre-picked varieties in the sales barn. There, you may also find other fantastic autumnal resources for decorating your home, such as straw bales, cornstalks, and mums. If that weren't enough, there's also popcorn.

Flinchbaugh's Orchard and Farm Market

Flinchbaugh's Orchard and Farm Market is less than 10 miles from Red Lion. The story of the farm began in 1951 when Jacob and Minnie Flinchbaugh moved their family farm from Lancaster to Hellam. Beginning with orchard crops, tomatoes, and dairy cattle, the operation would grow to include a wider variety of livestock and field crops, including pumpkins.

Starting on September 9, Flinchbaugh's welcomes visitors to pick their own neck, white, and jack-o'-lantern-style pumpkins. Farm staff precut the pumpkins and provide wagons for you to transport your haul. Prices range from $2 to $10 per gourd. Also, should you fancy it, Flinchbaugh's has apples for picking as well.

Extend the fun by exploring the farm's five-acre corn maze, which includes a puzzle with clues to guide you out. Afterward, take a guided walking tour of the farm, with six interactive stations where you can learn about the operation's pumpkin patch, fruit orchard, corn field, corn bins, honey bee hives, and soil station.
